Smart Home Technology for Disabilities

The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) is currently being rolled out throughout Australia. As part of the inclusions, a range of smart home products will likely be listed as consumables to better help people with disabilities gain greater independence when at home.

Smart technology can be much more than just gadgets and entertainment that impress your friends. The goal of the smart home is convenience, efficiency, and ease-of-living. Smart technology can transform lives, and for the elderly or those living with a disability, this can be a gamechanger.

SMARTHOMEWORKS provides a range of smart technology that can assist those with disabilities, and the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) will likely see a boost in what is available, and how it can be utilised.

Smart home technology for those
with disabilities in Australia

The NDIS states there are 4.3 million Australians with a disability, and puts a focus on making everyday tasks easier. This is where smart technology comes in.

The following situations can be improved with a range of devices currently available on the market:

  • Voice activation allowing occupants to control parts of the home via voice command inclusive of lights, door locks, and more
  • Sensors for light activation, air-conditioning and more
  • Automation to allow the home to respond to various scenarios like locking the door at night time, etc

These are just some of the possibilities, with many more able to be designed around the user’s specific needs. For example, those with sight issues can utilise smart home technology that is controlled by auditory cues. Smart lighting can be used to alert people with hearing issues to specific events.

Eligibility for devices with the NDIS

The NDIS will provide funding for anything deemed reasonable and necessary, and in terms of smart devices the following applies:

  • The device must provide disability support
  • You do not already own the device
  • The device is classed as the ‘lowest specification’ necessary to handle the task
  • The single device costs less than $600

There are a few exceptions to these rules, and our team will be able to help ensure the devices and set-ups you are considering are eligible with the scheme.
